Clothing is an investment.  Taking proper care of your clothing can save you considerable money over time.  We at Compass Cleaners are here to help with that.  We can help you save time and avoid the frustration of having to repair or replace garments unnecessarily.

·      Excessive cleaning of clothes can wear them out sooner.  Some garments can be worn more than once before washing or cleaning if you give them just a little care when you remove them.  Some tips to help you prolong the life and use of your garment are to check the garment when you take it off, look for spots, tears, lint, or anything else that would send it to the dirty clothes hamper.  Garments that appear clean and smell fresh should be hung to be worn again.  Jackets especially need to be brushed with a clothes brush paying particular attention to the shoulders and hung on a padded hanger.  You can save money on your clothes, as well as on laundry products and wear and tear on your washing machine by wearing garments again that aren’t soiled.

·      Use good quality hangers that support your clothes.  Flimsy wire hangers allow clothes to sag out of shape and can cause damage to the shoulders of your garments.

·      Don’t crowd clothes in your closet - crowding causes wrinkles and you will have to waste your time having to ironing. This also adds to the wear and tear of your clothes.  Storing out of season clothes in another location can make more room in your closet so that your closet doesn’t get crowded.

·      Sweaters should be folded and placed in drawers, on shelves, or in storage boxes.  Be sure that wool garments are clean when stored to deter insects.

·      Be sure to follow the cleaning instructions on the garment label.  This will save your clothes from damage.  Hot water can shrink rayon, wool, silk, and other fabrics.  It can also fade some colors.  Heat from the dryer can also shrink garments.  This can cause you to have to replace your clothes because they don’t fit properly.

·      If you don’t want to wash items by hand, check labels for cleaning instructions before you purchase garments.  Buy items that say “machine washable.”  This can help you save on dry cleaning costs.  Use a lingerie bag and cold or warm water on the gentle cycle to successfully machine wash some delicate items.

·      Treat spots and stains as soon as possible.  When you take the garment to your dry cleaner, point out any spots so that they can be given extra attention.  It helps if you can identify what caused the stain.  If the garment is washable, use a spot remover that is appropriate for the type of stain and the type of fabric.  Make sure to follow the instructions for stain remover products such as Spray ‘N Wash or Shout.  Test the product on an inside seam before using on the stain, if you are unsure about color-fastness.

·      Sorting your laundry before washing according to light or dark colors can help prevent dark colors bleeding onto your light colors.  Wash your delicate fabrics separate from sturdy fabrics.  This protects the delicate materials, which could be damaged by rubbing against coarse fabrics.  Wash items that produce lint, such as terry cloth towels, separately.

·      When you iron or press clothes, using the proper heat setting for the type of fabric can prevent ruining certain fabrics.  Delicate fabrics should be pressed with care by using a press cloth adds another layer of protection.

Think of your wardrobe as an investment.  Taking proper care of your clothes will make them last longer and stretch your clothing budget.  Think of all the time you will save not having to shop for clothes that wear out too soon.  Call Compass Cleaners for all of your dry-cleaning needs!
